Not sure if this is the right forum for this but I read some of these controversial topics and wonder--why do we post those we're so passionate about then complain when others give their honest opinions? To start controversy? Because we naively think we're going to suddenly make someone stop and go, "Oh! Now I get it! I hereby repent from my own beliefs!"?

I agree. You should not post on here unless you are willing to accept criticism and viewpoints that differ from your own.

I know, apparently, some people are just taken aback when not as many people as they expected agree with them.

Such is life, and such is politics.

My favorite forum has been in the Religion and Philosophy (Atheist and Christianity) section, because there was a lot of good thought and argument ~ from both sides ~ put into those exchanges.

But I can often tell when a poster just likes to be contrary and argue for the sake of stirring things up, and I don't like that.

I do find myself growing a little bored with all of them, though.

This forum gives us an anonymous break from the follies of everyday life where we must hold our tongue to such discussions. Obviously if you discuss the ramifications of same-sex marriage or presidential politics in the workplace, there's a chance of offending somebody and getting fired.

Here, who really cares if you tick off a bunch of people with your ideas? It's not like they know you and can do anything about it.

Part of the fun is being able to flex some mental muscles that haven't been used for awhile ....but I also geniunely wonder the whys and hows of another persons belief system. It is really interesting. I do hate it when someone will blast all other posters and then only back up their pov with 'the bible told me so'....but then that is just my pet peeve.
I will say, that particularily in the election forum (yes, that pit of hell) listening to others povs really has made me more hopeful about an Obama administration. I feel more informed on a number of other controversial topics as well.
