If they actually thought that they were going to be forced to pay back what they took, they might not have taken it in the first place.

Why is an American CEO paid 40 times what they make in Europe or Japan - are they THAT much better? LOL!

The 'yes' vote is winning 7 to 1.

we can not make a blanket statement that most of the companies failed due to corrupt COE's or deregulations are to be blamed. it could also be a case of just plain bad judgement and incorrect decisions. that being said, i agree that they should be penalised and made to pay back the millions in salary and bonuses they took home on the way dow.

but if we extend the same logic to our beloved out-going president (and maybe the one before who started deregulation), should we ask them to return their salaries too?

I strongly believe that they should be forced to pay back the money they took in bonuses; I strongly support salary caps being placed on executive pay more generally. Unfortunately, I'm realistic enough to recognize that although morally this is what should happen, it never will.

No, you shouldn't retroactively penalize them by taking away their salaries. They have families and things to take care of the same as the rest of us. It's heartless to say that they should be forced into bankruptcy because deregulation screwed Americans. If they actually committed a crime, receive a fair trial, and are convicted of a crime, then by all means impose a fine but don't take away so much money that they are forced into debt and homelessness. I'm really starting to wonder at the lack of compassion evident in so many Americans. Yes, it's easy to blame these CEOs but they are still people and are deserving of basic human decency.

Taking care of their families doesn't cost 50 million dollars, which is the cost of some of the bonuses (meaning that is in addition to their already multi-million dollar annual salaries) that these CEOs got while their companies laid off thousands. CEOs shouldn't be getting compensated millions upon millions of dollars while they are firing thousands of employees who could have remained employed if the CEO gave up just a couple million of their bonus. It may not be criminal, but it sure as hell should be.
