Couples who have more than two children are being “irresponsible” by creating an unbearable burden on the environment, the British government’s green adviser warned.

Jonathon Porritt, who chairs the government’s Sustainable Development Commission, says curbing population growth through contraception and abortion must be at the heart of policies to fight global warming.

That is the other "politically incorrect" side of environmental issues facing the world today. We are living in a Malthusian nightmare; but there seems little that the world can (or will) do about it. Charles Darwin held out hope that man would evolve into a more perfect species, but feared that he was already doomed to self-destruction before getting there. Certainly, we are no better for following the Commandment to "Be fruitful and multiply. . . ." Genesis 1:28 (KJV). Ours has not been a history of good husbandry. Man may be master on this planet; but we are rapidly laying waste to the land and the sea upon which we depend for life's subsistence; for when this goes, then, surely as the earth turns, so shall we go also.

It seems the person quoted in the article is proposing government limitations on numbers of children such as in China.

Don't be surprised if it hits our doorsteps in the near future.

Some of these environmentalists have some bizarre logic and science.... I am all for saving the planet but you really have to separate the fanatics from the real science...

Certainly, we're living in a "Malthusian nightmare" when the number of overweight and obese people is now double the number of the undernourished, when life expectancies are at an all-time high and infant mortality rates at an all-time low, when the world is at relative peace in comparison to other periods, and much of the world's population, even in many poorer countries, have luxuries that would have been thought impossible for the rich 100 years ago: cell phones, radios, TV sets, internet access, motorbikes / cars, etc.

China strongly discourages more than one, and India recommends no more than two (and as a result, India is expected to pass China in the near future). These two countries account for about 40% of the world population so they're well aware of the issues. We... well, we're simply inexperienced. Like conservatives elsewhere, especially Muslims, we believe in God given right to procreate and do so without guilt. There's that historical religious connection between Islam and Christianity, again.

Having said that, no need to worry. I believe we will find a way out of overpopulation thru wars, diseases and killing each other for resources.

And the fact that China and India each have well over a billion people shows a historical religious connection between them?
Please explain.

We can't stop her from doing anything legal or illegal (what is legal/illegal is deemed by society)... she can choose on that... but if she comes asking for our protection, money, and to be part of our society... then that comes at a price... if she doesn't like, she is free to move somewhere else...
