COLUMBIA, S.C. – A black state senator is pushing a bill that would require South Carolina cities and counties to give their workers a paid day off for Confederate Memorial Day or lose millions in state funds.
Democratic Sen. Robert Ford's bill won initial approval from a Senate subcommittee Tuesday.
Bill would require paid Confederate holiday in SC - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090203/ap_on_re_us/confederate_holiday;_ylt=ApGfFcnZc3VxJQMAPFGg97Vvz wcF - broken link)
While I don't know that I support the holiday, I'd encourage everyone to read the rational sentiments expressed in the article.
Still, I disagree with the idea that somehow MLK Day is a holiday for Black folks and the white folks need a holiday too to make things nice and even. Dr. King was for unity and equality, not any sort of racial primacy. These are two very different holidays. One is a memorial for the death of many soldiers. The other is a memorial for the life and work of one man. I can't really get behind the faulty comparison.
