Seems like it was the Island bloc within the Republican Party that swung the vote to Steele. If this link is to believed the question now becomes what will they get in return? At any rate more reason to believe Steele will make good on diversity within the leadership of the party.
The new chairman suggested in his victory speech that he knows he's made a commitment.
"I want to thank especially my friends in the territories, who I can assure all of you will be a part of building this party in a way we have never seen before," he said early in the speech.

Take a look at the Bush cabinet which was widely supported. Out of 33 people, 13 do not meet the "rich white man" description that people love to give. That's about 39% and is far more than he would have been required to nominate under any affirmative action quota the Democrats would push.

Many of you are talking about the Republican Party of today. It appears that the new leadership wants to put a different face on the party. I would think that rank and file members are cheering this and their prospects for the future.
