It is always fascinating to watch folks call for the abrogation of contracts when it the folks being abrogated are working class.
The UAW agree to help bailout GM in December of 2008 by assuming the medical benefits of its retired members based upon a lump sum payoff by GM. Now that GM wishes to renege on that agreement which was reached to keep GM afloat, we have posters arguing that the UAW is the bad guy.
Amazing feats of moral relativism.
Well, guess what. Those UAW workers you seem concerned about (and should be)? The UAW may be costing them their jobs.
It is Chapter 11 which is reorganization and why wouldn't they survive it as a scaled down company forced to drop money losing platforms.
In the absence of some unprecidented agreement by the government to guarantee warranty work on all GM cars - I doubt if they could survive.
People are not going to pay the high price of a new vehicle if the warranty is in very serious doubt - as it would be under Chapter 11... Plus the resale value would take a tremendous beating.
I personally wouldn't think of buying a car from a manufacturer in chapter 11, and think most Americans feel the same way...
The stupid and uneducated were the people who once needed unions to earn a decent wage for a decent day's work. Now the stupid and uneducated have Dumbocrats that encourage people not to work by giving them handouts.
It's no wonder that the stupid and uneducated, who can't get a job or do not want a job, make up the lion's share of Dumbocrat voters.
Greedy bastards are going to put themselves out of a job completely, and it is probably the best solution for the country. UAW is trying to blackmail the taxpayers into funding their corporate breaking greed, to hell with them.
Greedy? Taking over the contractual health care obligations of their retired members?
Putting the UAW out of business, best thing for American... and who will be left to keep American workers at wage levels above Mumbai taxi drivers?
Perhaps GM, and the UAW both need to go away. Start with a clean slate. Perhaps the vendors(parts manufacturers) and a new union could restart a new auto industry, and avoid the pitfalls of greed and pandering that brought us to were the auto industry is now.
I place most of the blame squarely upon the union and their overt greed. While the workers may be stupid and uneducated, they are still paid WAYYYYYYY more than what could be considered a "fair" wage. Because of that, the vast majority of workers that do not work in a union environment are priced out of buying the stuff the union workers produce, and are forced to pay for their exorbitant benefits in the price of the vehicle.....Kill the unions....all of 'em.

It has nothing to do with greed, or the well being of union workers. It was a strongarm tactic conducted by the UAW to show that they still have influence. If they show any weakness, or admit they were wrong, the UAW will lose important leverage on the political scene, something I am sure they do not want to happen...
DETROIT (AP) — Negotiators for the United Auto Workers walked out of concession talks with General Motors Corp. Friday night in a dispute over payments to a union-administered retiree health care fund, a person briefed on the talks said Saturday.
The breakdown comes at a critical time as GM races against a Tuesday deadline to submit a plan to the government showing how it can become viable.
I say, the hell with the Union. GM should file Chap 11 BK - which will dissolve the contract. Re-affirm their obligation to retirees and certain other benefits. Then, say BYE BYE to the UAW!

DETROIT (Reuters) – Negotiators for General Motors Corp and the United Auto Workers union, staring down a Tuesday deadline for the struggling automaker to submit a plan for its survival to the U.S. government, were making progress in high-stakes talks aimed at cutting GM's costs and debt, a person familiar with the matter said.
On Sunday, there were some signs that the two sides were making headway on the central question of how the cash-strapped automaker will fund a trust for retiree health care, according to a person briefed on the discussions.
I'm tired of this 'race to the bottom' for the American worker.
Not really.
There are plenty of non-union employees that do just fine without the corrupt middle man.
