Unfortunately, Zimbabwe is a good example of how NOT to run a multi-racial country. The Zimbabweans, for whatever reason, have decided to put 'evening the score between the races' ahead of eating. Sadly, in the process, they've also succeeded in pretty well changing a once-vibrant modern farming industry, one that once fed MUCH of southern Africa, into a rusting, moldering 'wasteland'. Steep price to pay for 'evening the score'....and there's much here to cause us to ponder our OWN fate, here in the USA.

Well, it is a tale of one government overthrowing another one, and then ruining the country. Rhodesia was a thriving country ruled by a white minority, but the then the blacks went to war over the land and eventually won the war (The Bush War). The winners have been confiscating the farms from the whites and handing them over to people who don't know anything about farming. Basically they take one large farm and split it into 50 pieces, and hand out the pieces to 50 families. LOL. The Tanzanians did the same in the 1960 and now they are one of the poorest countries in the world. The bush war ended in 1979 and it has been downhill ever since.

I wonder what the point of your thread is.

True...the same thing even happened during the freely-elected communist takeover of Chile years ago. Allende 'took over' the large dairy industry in Southern Chile, (run MOSTLY by a small group of German-descended Chileans), ran the owners off the land, and parceled it out in pieces to the 'farmhands'. Being a 'farmhand' doesn't equate to running a modern business, and the dairy industry in Chile was just about destroyed.

Racial issues aside, Zimbabwe had a 'world-class' modern mechanized agricultural industry, the 'breadbasket of Southern Africa'. EVERY modern agricultural industry is run by only a 'handful' of people, and modern equipment, huge tracts, and an efficient marketing system in the 'hands of a few', cannot be replaced by antiquated tractors, hoes, pitchforks, and shovels in the 'hands of many'....no matter WHO the 'few' are...

Zimbabwe Gives Land Back to White Farmers After Wrecking Economy

Quote:
Two decades after President Robert Mugabe wrecked Zimbabwe’s economy by urging black subsistence farmers to violently force white commercial farmers and their workers off their land, his successor has thrown in the towel.

Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has proposed settling all outstanding claims against it by farmers by offering them land.

The southern African nation this year budgeted about Z$380 million ($21 million) for compensation. Several farms that were protected under so-called Bilateral Investment Protection Agreements belonged to nations including the U.K., South Africa, Australia, the Netherlands and Denmark.

Default Zimbabwe Gives Land Back to White Farmers After Wrecking Economy

https://www.yahoo.com/news/zimbabwe-...150503602.html

Two decades after President Robert Mugabe wrecked Zimbabwe’s economy by urging black subsistence farmers to violently force white commercial farmers and their workers off their land, his successor has thrown in the towel.

The seizures that began in 2000 were ratified by the government, which said they were needed to redress colonial imbalances. A vibrant agricultural industry that exported tobacco and roses and grew most of the food the nation needed collapsed. Periodic food shortages ensued, inflation became the world’s highest and the manufacturing industry was decimated. What was one of Africa’s richest countries became one of its poorest.

In 20 years, they couldn't even figure out how to farm for themselves! Of course, they believed that the reason whites achieved more success was because of racism, and they could just take the land and just as easily own successful farms. Nope.

Perhaps liberals in the US should take note.

Of course, few, if any, of those farmers will ever be going back. Many were murdered and those returning would face the constant threat of violence.

Now South Africa is headed in the same direction.

When I was young, people were outraged at the racist policies in South Africa.

I understand many farmers fled the country.

I can't imagine any of them risking their and their family's lives and futures by returning to a place governed like that.

Farming is a business. You can’t just give inexperienced people a commercial farm and expect them to be successful no matter what race they are.

Obviously, Mugabe was too stupid to understand that, or not. Actually, I’m pretty sure he knew better. He just wanted to remain in power by fomenting a revolution from below. Expropriating farms was a stupid way to do it.
