Funny calling him a leftist considering he beat McCain on two very interesting subjects, taxes and national security. What that must say about the right these days to get waxed on taxes and national security...

B. Obama, according to my perspective in the context of world politics, leans right. Problem is, this country is so far hard right that it makes someone who's leaning a little right a "flaming liberal".

Funny that this came up as a topic during a meeting the other day. I assert that the right has moved left, the left has moved right to the point where they may just as well be two wings of the same party, the Incumbent Party.

I imagine a scale of 1 to 100 with Democrats leaning 5% to the left and Republicans leaning 5% to the right, Neoconservatives and Neoliberals bouncing between the two as one would change warm socks out of the dryer. Both sides frothing at the mouth over the 10% in order to lure as many indi's as they can. The heady days of actual Liberalism and Conservatism lost amid the cries and screams of small percentage of freeper extremist from either side pounding upon the drums to keep their side in a fevered pitch much as one would toss half a cow to a Great White shark.

Today, political philosophy could fit on the back of a bubble gum wrapper in a series of one line sound bytes.

Independents wouldn't vote for him OR McCain....otherwise they aren't independent.

They may lie and call themselves independent but so what.

(chuckling) Surely you are not serious.

Independent as far as I know were just people who were not registered Democrat or Republican and could vote for anyone they choose, not sure how that is a lie. Some states require that the register independent but many more states now do not require a person to register their party. (open primary states)

btw, if I'm not mistaken, "independent" is the fastest growing voter bloc today.

Independents who support either party are simply lying to themselves...or simply blow with the wind.

Yes, blowing with the wind. That would be the right-wing term for being things like pragmatic and flexible and trying to judge a given situation on its actual merits (dare I say nuance?) instead of by resort to some formula of absolute, simplistic, and predetermined dogma.

I've read through this entire thread and have concluded Obama has failed to communicate. The haters are in desperate need of those one line sound bytes repeated over and over and over again. It soothes them. It makes them feel in control of the world once again. Just a theory.

I've never seen such infantile displays amongst grown adults in my life until these past few years.

I'm a registered independent. Though I'm conservative, the Republican party politicians are not. In the state of Louisiana, it's very hard to tell the difference between Republican and Democrat except that the majority of our convicted former politicians are Democrat, Governor Edwin Edwards for example. As long as our state remains an open primary (for local and state elections) I will remain independent and continue to vote for the person I feel is best for the job. Incase you're unfamiliar with our state's election setup; all candidates for a position run together, if no one gets more than 50% of the vote then there's a run off. It was set up this way by the state's Democrats to help ensure they stayed in power since in most statewide elections at the time, the Democratic party received the majority of the vote. However, after numerous scandals plus a better educated voting population, the tide in local and state elections have turned to a more even distribution depending on the location and candidates. This doesn't mean Republicans in our state are any better than the Democrats in our state.
