In the city where I live the newspaper's only important part is the sports section. Whenever I see someone pick up a paper, they pull out sports and leave the rest. Some people check out the ad supplements, women look at fashion tips. It's rare to see someone reading the first section or even the editorial page. Summarizing important games, or player's antics, even make it to the front page.
Yes, journalism and news coverage is a thing of the past. The demand for this has plummeted over the decades.
Pretty much - most of the front page stuff I read online the day before anyway, and a lot of the time in greater detail.
OTOH I do go on a couple of local newspaper websites to check out what's going on in the city. Those I would miss - not so much the print edition. I don't know anyone under the age of about 40 that subscribes to any.
we can ignore that pesky 1st amendment's strict prohibition on such a restriction.
Really....
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Are churches allowed to make endorsements and maintain their tax exempt status? I don't think so. The press can make all the endorsements it likes but it can't enjoy the privilege of tax exempt status in doing so.
You know it is quite remarkable that on one hand the argument seems to be that businesses, and newspapers are most assuredly businesses, should not be interfered with by the government, but strangely when a business wishes to enjoy governmental largesse, then such largesse must be given without restriction. Strange that.
I feel political ENDORSEMENTS should never have been part of the NEWS in the first place.
Most newspapers in this country (at least the old ones) were started for the sole reason of printing political endorsements and opinions.
The SOLE reason. Including some news here and there, came later, and was a secondary function for a long time.
Now, making money is most of their reason for publishing. Hence the trend toward getting it first rather than getting it right; "if it bleeds it leads", etc.
But publishing opinions, often political ones, is still a major part of their daily grind.
Next they can bail out the 8 track player manufacturers and buggy whip makers.
Doc, those buggy whip makers may well be in vogue again if the EPA gets its way about using fuel that isn't animal fat or something like that. They are even getting ready to take beef away from us with their cow fart laws. I guess they will have to leave horses outside that law because we will need them to move about.
Just so we are clear, you are supporting muzzling the press from endorsing a candidate?
I wonder why no ranting, snarling, and raving about the "liberal media"?
Probably, most of them endorsed Obama anyway. You know, the enemy, the terrorist loving "liberal media", and all those others who are out to destroy America. And, as you know, the "liberal media" always distorts everything anyway.
Check out some previous threads about the media in America.
The print media has been muzzled before. Like not being able to publish photos of war dead. Or to cover combat action that isn't approved by the military.
