Ever been there?
There's a good chance you'd agree.
Been to Salzburg, Innsbruck and most especially Vienna many many times as it's a quick hop by train from my family's Hungarian village. Never heard of Austrian as a language. My ex went with me once and she spoke the Austrian's language, GERMAN.
Pretending to be a globetrotter won't sell any rational person here.
Just like the 'official' language of the U.S., UK and Australia is English. We, however, don't call our trucks 'lorries', spell 'color' with a 'u' or 'organization' with an 's.'
The differences between U.S. and UK English were enough to cause Scholastic to 'translate' the 'Harry Potter' books for American release. I would imagine that there are similar differences between German and Austrian 'German.'
If someone said we in the U.S. speak 'American' would that be wrong or just descriptive?

Well, if someone were to say that they speak 'American' they are generally ridiculed as being a rube, a republican and/or inbred.

It is wrong. Any pupil who states Americans speak 'American' is immediately corrected by a schoolteacher.
American English is acceptable, just as if Obama stated 'Austrian German' was their language that would be acceptable, as there may be dialect differences. 'Austrian' is not a language, therefore Obama did not correctly state an elementary fact.

Just sayin'....
Yep, ask someone from Mexico if they speak "Mexican" and see what happens!
