Also, FWIW, piracy has been going on for years. My husband works on ships all over the world and when they travel through the Straits of Malacca they shut lights off, go as fast as possible and don't stop for anything. He's refused trips to work off the coast of Nigeria because ship workers are routinely kidnapped and held for ransom. This is nothing new.

What will barry do? Pay them off? Ignore it? Go hide under the covers?
None of the above. He'll apologize and blame America.

Default Like a good liberal...

Like a good liberal, he'll attack the reporter who broke the story that Americans have been hijacked by Somali pirates, saying he's a loony wingnut. Then, he'll question the definition of "hijacked" and "pirates". Then, when backed into a corner with the facts, he'll question whether or not those hijacked are truly U.S. citizens and therefore, we don't have to deal with the situation.

Personally,
I cant see why people would place themselves in such a position. If nobody would crew an unarmed ship, they would arm the ships. International law is a funny thing. It only matters if you let it. I think the US is terribly negligent not INSISTING that ships under her flag be able to fend off attack.

Yeah, but you risk facing a UN Resolution.

Apparently they already are. Breaking news is that the crew has retaken the ship. Even tossed a few of the pirates overboard!

I agree with enough is enough, but I don't think we should pay for the whole thing. This kind of thing done unilaterally can bleed you white. Everybody's ships are being hit. The Ruskies have already shown they won't hesitate to pull the trigger if they have a target. Make the UN Security Council do the job it was created to do. Get a few carriers of different nationalities in there and run air patrols. Pursue them right into their harbors. We always have ships in that general area, so it would be mainly a mission change for us. Get some buy in from other countries and stop playing the Lone Ranger or the Incredible Hulk, or whatever it is we're supposed to have been for the last 8 years. Our satellites could be a big help.

Could be getting interesting:

The US crew of a ship hijacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia has retaken control of the vessel, according to Pentagon sources.

Unnamed US defence officials said one pirate had been captured by the crew of the Danish-owned Maersk Alabama, which was seized earlier in the Indian Ocean.

The status of the other pirates was unknown, but officials said they were "in the water".
