Proposed Bill Would Limit Lottery Winnings for Poor | WDEF News 12 | News, Weather and Sports for Chattanooga and the Tennessee Valley

A bill under consideration in Tennessee's General Assembly could make it a lot harder for you to win the big bucks.
If you're on welfare, should you be spending money on lottery tickets?
That's a question before Tennessee lawmakers this session.
A proposed bill puts a 600-dollar cap on lottery winnings for people on state or federal assistance.
Any additional winnings would go back to the state.
The legislator proposing the bill says people getting government assistance like food stamps shouldn't be spending money on lottery tickets.
But others say you shouldn't police the way folks spend their cash.
Cecil Hampton of Chattanooga says, "If you giving them the money, you giving it to take care of they self. If they feel like they can buy a lottery ticket to win, then that's what they should be able to do."
If the bill passes, net lottery proceeds are expected to decrease more than 6 Million dollars a year.

I agree with people on welfare not being able to win the lottery. I don't agree with capping the winnings though. it's always funny to read a rags to riches story because you know 1 year from then, you will read a riches to rags story. poor people are idiots. they know nothing of taxes, so they spend all their money and forget about the taxes. this is why wealth redistribution doesn't work.

I understand where they are coming from, but instead of capping the amount of money that can be won, how about using the 'big win' to refund the money that state has spent on the welfare recepient? Anything beyond that amount would then belong to the winner exclusively.

This story is worse then the one I read that the govt wants to limit our use of toilet paper we use to wipe the Politicians from our azzes.

I agree that assistance/food stamp money should not be used to buy tickets. But who the hell are they to tell people what they can and cant buy with their own money? Are those politicos that bored where they have nothing else to do but think up laws like this?

Hitting the lottery is real hard. Odds are way against you. But for so many many people in this country the alternative of not trying is incomprehensible. But when some one goes overboard buying tickets there is a problem. But that problem is less dangerous then legal acts such as smoking and no one is trying to ban that.

Man I hate this govt. with such a passion. Damn commies.

HAHA what is the matter is government afraid they might win and not need the government assistant anymore. Maybe they should just remove welfare all together then the government would actual start doing something productive.

it's not really the states fault that the majority of poor people are idiots.

No!!

Call it a voluntary tax but it does not abuse anyone. It's still a choice to purchase a ticket or not. True poorer people tend to buy more tickets because they see no way out but what's wrong with that?

That works in theory. But for every winner, there are millions of people spending entirely too much money on it that never win.

It's easy to say to yourself "Gee...if I had $150 million, I could pay back $100k."

Powerball, Keno, or the casinos -- is there any difference? Should people be forced to show a paycheck stub or their checking account balance before being admitted into a casino or being sold a lottery ticket?
It is unenforceable.
