INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis' chief of police and the Marion County sheriff on Thursday announced a new effort to get illegal guns off the streets by offering a reward for turning in firearms.

Indianapolis Metropolitan police Chief Michael Spears and Sheriff Frank Anderson call the effort "Operation Saturday Night Special."

The program has the aim of making the community safer by significantly cutting the number of guns in the wrong hands, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported. Almost 90 percent of the people killed last year in Indianapolis were shot.

They have a similar program here in Miami a couple of times a year. They give $50 vouchers and don't ask any questions. The good thing is that they get these guns off of the street. The bad thing is that they don't even get test fired to compare to homicides. They all get melted. So much for the murder weapon.
