Congragulations to all so far who have posted.. I read them expecting people to credit Obama for this taking place but its due to customers complaining to companies about not being able to understand their reps. In addition, Since so many jobs have move to countries like India, their cost is getting on par with ours because our costs have continued to fall over the last several years due to a falling dollar.

I often hire programers for jobs outside the country, small jobs which used to cost $10-$20 now cost $50-$100 for a 24 hour projects.. I can tell you first hand that the costs have gone up substantially.

I once hired a guy in Moldova to write a program for me, I sent him two jars of peanut butter as payment because he has never had any. To them it was similar to caviar for us, a luxury item which many of them could never afford. (shipping alone cost over $100).. I cant tell you how much joy he had sharing peanut butter with his friends and family.. A very interesting story which makes me so greatful for the everday items that we dont appreciate in our everyday lives..

....
Before the recent economic downturn, there were some Indian companies considering ransferring some of their cheaper work to small towns in the US. Some Indian companies (Infosys?) had farmed their labor to China who then farmed it to Vietnam. Bigger companies there have to grow revenue at a fast rate - they are interested in getting higher-end jobs (which we should worry about), and not call centers which now are less profitable and frought with high turnover.

China is more expensive than India. Now India is more expensive than Vietnam.
The US is more expensive than any of them. Once these offshore countries get too expensive the hunt is on for the next lowest cost country.

Yes. I just read Nike is closing three factories in China and moving some operations to a less expensive country. I don't recall which country. American corporations move into a third world country, let the people experience a half way decent standard of living and they desert the country.

Yes, they are very scripted. They don't understand the nuances of our particular kind of English but I will have to admit that many of them have learned English very well, sometimes they have only a slight accent now.

Africa is the next place to be exploited for dirt cheap labor. US & Chinese corps have been investing a lot in Africa to try and bring clean drinking water, improve crops, improve schools, stop the spread of HIV, and upgrade infrastructure. The corps can play this off as humanitarianism, but they are really looking for labor that they can pay next to nothing for.

I had to call Delta last week - talk about frustrating. Don't know where he was but I had a heck of a time understanding what the guy was saying.
I have never complained to a company about the language problem - guess it just goes to show that we should.

REALLY surprised to see Sallie Mae had operations overseas. I thought they were still a quasi-govt establishment.

Guess not:
At least Delta flies to South Africa. My problem is when companies that do not do business in a country that the call center is located. I got rid of Sprint and Juno because of this

THOSE EVIL MOTHERF--KERS!

Can you believe that? The horrors of globalism. Obviously, the best thing we can hope for is that it fails miserably, so Africans will not be exploited.

Thank God... I hate dealing with people I can't understand, especially when it comes down to something technical. I'm all for globalization in terms of creating jobs overseas, but not at the expense of losing American one's.

Companies looking to save money on call centers, should do what my company did, and look at investing in more rural communities, where the cost of living is lower and where there is a need for jobs.

Some more $10 dollar an hour jobs returning to the USA.
