no way. she's a construction worker and he's a butterfly catcher. don't lie.
Oops. I just remembered. She's actually from another country. The main reason they got married was so she could become a U.S. citizen. See, if you're hetero (or pretend to be), you can pull off stunts like that.

I can also pull off a stunt like being in my mid 60's and finding an 18 year old russian or asian bride.

True. Can you picture a 65yo gay guy trying to import his 18yo boyfriend from Thailand so he can become a U.S. citizen? (Of course the 18yo was 12yo when they met, but that's a different discussion.)
To answer the OP, it's really just perception. However, marriage is socially and traditionaly been defined by society as being between man and woman. You can't force society to break with thousands of years of tradition.
In California, Prop8 passed with a majority vote, these are the people who care.
Question for the thread - do you think that if civil unions provided all the advantages as marriage does, do you think homosexuals would be content with a civil union?
I think tax breaks and etc are all smoke screen, I think buttom line the gay community wants society to redefine marriage. Which is fine, but you can't push it on them. You cant demonize people for a belief that's been carried down, like I said, for thousands of years.
I believe it's a state issue and should be settled by referendums. Put it before the people for vote like CA did. Let the voters have final say.

Well, yes and no. Slavery and segregation were "traditions" that were broken, and the changes happened immediately.

Some would be content, some wouldn't. Not all gays think alike. You realize that, don't you? (My hunch is that you see gays as a monolithic group.) It's interesting that you see it as an "us versus them" issue.

Well of course you do. That's what all homophobes and gay-haters say. You don't trust gays enough to take them for their word, so it really doesn't matter what they say to you, does it?

Sorry. It doesn't always work that way. Voters don't get the final say on a lot of things. The courts have often had to intervene to settle matters. We have a judicial branch of government for a reason.
well that added absolutely nothing to the conversation. it always comes back to the race expert from snow white idaho. how about instead of making every single thing about race, you just stick to talking about fruitty marriage. that's what the thread is about. my friend anunidentifiedmale seems to know that. why don't you?
I'm sorry - was I talking over your head? Were you incapable of seeing the relevance? Is discussing an analogy beyond your comprehension?
If so, DM me and I'll provide you a less complicated version. No reason to waste the time and bandwidth for all the other intelligent people here.
that is retarded. social security is a freaking scam as it is, and the program should be scrapped. if you drop dead when you are 65, you don't collect crap.
And another bit of "wisdom" from the guy who gets angry if anybody but him goes off topic.
So, when you drop dead at 65, you also don't collect crap from any other insurance that you've paid for - health, auto, home. Are you going to demand that those things be scrapped?
Sorry for providing another analogy. I know you have trouble with those. Same offer - DM me if you need help understanding.

nothing is over my head, it was just foolish to inject race into a conversation about gay marriage. especially coming from the whitest state in the union. I asked for the difference between civil unions and marriage. you brought up rosa parks. I am pretty sure that I was right to question your comment. after all, I've got the wisdom of a greek philosopher, and the looks of a greek god.

I never get angry. I am always smirking. last time I checked, the insurances you named were choices. there isn't a box on paychecks next to social security that says, "no thanks." your analogy failed.
