From George Will:

George Will

Basically, the state is screwed badly. What gets me is the hold the unions have on the state:

"Even teachers might be laid off. California teachers — the nation's highest-paid, with salaries about 25 percent above the national average — are emblematic of the grip that government employees unions have on the state, where 57 percent of government workers are unionized (the national average is 37 percent). "

And the fools in government will not cut spending and will protect the same unions that are destroying them. People and businesses are moving out of California, yet the change nothing. If you can't bend even a little, you are going to break.

More proof that liberal politics are an utter failure.

Unions are terrible, taxes are terrible, spending is terrible.

The California state government has failed miserably primarily because of these three things (and a fourth thing...providing so many services to illegals).

California is a microcosm of what will be happening in the United States over the next 7.5 years.

You hit the nail on the head. California has always touted its "leading the nation" way of doing things. Afterall, who was the first to ban trans-fats in restaurants and enforcing plastic bag recycling containers in grocery stores statewide? Instead of focusing on true priorities and fiscal responsibility, they insist on making sure none of the union's feelings are hurt and that everyone gets a piece of the handout pie. The Obama Administration has made clear by its recent actions that California-dreaming is not a liability, but a model in which to lead the country.

Not to mention Obama and his cronyism with Union leaders. Unions will only get stronger and more evil under this administration and that is a bad thing.

I love hearing people bitching about California when they don't live there

Well, considering that California is the 2nd most espensive state to live in (right after Hawaii) is it all surprising (or inappropriate) that teacher salaries are higher than the nationwide average? It's probably higher than the nationwide averages for MOST job classifications. Seems to me that if it's an expensive place to live then salaries are could/should be higher than average as well.

It doesn't exactly take a brain surgeon to figure that out..

Or maybe it is so expensive to live there because you have to pay the over-inflated salaries of the unionized teachers and other sorts. Doesn't take a brain surgeon to see that is what the article is talking about!

This is not the chicken and the egg.

REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR.

How is that proof that "liberal politics" are an utter failure?
