As if thats possible.. Even moving to other forms of taxation, (such as a flat tax, or sales tax), the IRS would be needed because there will always be those who simply flat out lie on their tax returns if there was no office to prosecute.

The fair tax doesn't require paper work from the inividual.

No such thing as tax returns and no ability to lie.

Sure there is, for example, under a fair tax system, people can be self employed and not pay taxes, small stores could collect sales tax revenues and not send it onto the government, keeping it as "profits"

No, no, no.

Taxes would be reaped only on purchases. At every level. Corporate, small business or inividual.

It wouldn't matter who you are or what you are. You'd only get taxed at the point of purchase.

And if the IRS was abolished, NOTHING would stop the store from just keeping the money and not turning it over.

You know how many little stores would not pay taxes because the government wouldnt even knew they existed? And even if they knew they existed, the branch of government with legal authority to go after these individuals... The IRS..

Uh, that would be a consious and deliberate act to break the law.

That could get a person prison time.

If the IRS was abolished, what branch of government would put that individual in jail? How would they know the law was being broken?

I'm sure there would still have to be a governmental body to count beans.

All businesses would still be under the government's eye.

But loopholes would be closed. The tax code ( how many pages is it? Thousands? ) wouldn't be necessary. Folks who cheat and get a pass on taxes now wouldn't be able to evade taxation because on any big purchase the tax would be administered on the spot.

i.e. IRS under just another name...

I'm not saying that the tax system shouldnt be changed, the question is, abolish the IRS? If you abolish it and then replace it with another authority that does the same thing, have you really abolished it, or simply changed the name?
