The more time goes on, the more I think that maybe the only real solution for the many political arguments we have today is to de-centralize the US Government.
My thinking is to strip the Federal Level down to Military/Security, Law/Guarding the Constitution, Diplomacy and Guarding interstate commerce. Everything else from Healthcare to education to Welfare to social issues (excpet matters of civil rights) should be left up to states/municipalites to decide. If NY wants Universal Health care and Texas does not, why should one be held slave to the whims of another?
A large, mismanaged (and such a large one always will be mismanaged), socialistic bureaucracy will ALWAYS fail.
Bringing everything down to a more local level (as is the spirit of the Constitution, actually) would result in better representation and local/regional issues would be much more effectively addressed.
I'd also love to see state officials out in the communities more actually talking to people, welcoming their constitutents into their offices to discuss what THEY want, etc.

The government is supposed to work for US...if power is concentrated 1,300 miles away from me in Washington, how can it effectively work for me at all? I'd much prefer what affects me the most to be decided 150 miles away in Austin.
I think matters of public health and education should be centralized. For instance with education, if you don't have one high standard, the quality of life for the entire nation will go down the tubes.

Well, I look at it this way:
If South Carolina banned science tomorrow (Ya know, the bible and all that), companies looking for technologically learned people would abandon the state for a place that serves their needs.
In essance, states would be forced to make not-so-stupid decisions since they'd lose out to states that make more advanced decisions.

Your thoughts?
It's already decentralized... MA has universal health care. The issue is how decentralized should it be... should the Fed gov't abolish the dept of education like some conservatives want and leave it to each state or should they mandate some basic requirements so inequality can be diminished?

And while they get around to doing that, the citizens suffer and, as a result, the US loses good human capital.

The Tower of Babel fails every time someone attempts to build one. Why fail again?
