I have a great idea for a reality show. we take 100 murderers and put them on a deserted island. we drop them off with nothing. we then put a couple of hazards on the island, like venomous snakes. we have a year to watch and laugh at their antics. they will probably kill each other off before the end of the year, but if the survive the year, they would be set adrift. all proceeds from the show would go to the families of the victims. solves several problems. over populated prisons would benefit and so would the tax payer.
I think one major thing we are forgetting here is that this would just be a temporary solution when dealing with criminals. Ask any prison guard and they will tell you, convicts are very good at surviving. They will make things out of anything they can get their hands on and they are very creative. You have to be when you have spent years in relative isolation. And fear for your life at the hands of some other deviant is more than enough to get the old noggin working. I think we would have the makings of a new society, one in which the weak are not just ruled, they are possibly eaten as well. It wouldn't take long for even civilized people put in such a situation to resort to cannibalism in order to survive. And unless you are putting them on an island devoid of plant life and trees, you can pretty much expect a shanty city full of deviants to be fully functioning within a month or so. It would not be all fun and games when half of the hundred actually survives the year on the island. Many have survived years and years in the pen, no small task in some of our prisons. Then we would have 50 murderers free to go where they pleased. So if this idea ever becomes reality, we better make sure the island is thousands of miles away from civilization. Because if we don't, you might just have a new neighbor in a few years. Fresh off of "Rehab Island"
Sidenote: This would be a cool idea for drug addicts. Put them on the island with only the supplies they need to live and build their own huts. Make sure they can live, but provide no luxuries. Let them live a year as clean, sober people having to rely on their wits for any pleasures or luxuries. You might just get back some able bodied, clear minded individuals who can really contribute to society.

the drug addicts would probably find a way to get their fix. pruno (prison hooch) is made in our prisons. they can ferment fruit found on the island. it would be interesting seeing if they were able to get their fix. hell, man discovered that licking a toad can transform your thoughts.

The French did it 125 years ago with Devil's Island.
If you are really interested, read Henri Charriere's book "Papillon" about the time he served there and his escape. It was made into a movie, but the book is much better.

We did that already. The bankers down on Wall Street won. The govt. got so mad they said "eff the victims" and took the proceeds for themselves. In case you forgot the show was called Survivor: Manhattan
