So is this a schism? Have Cardinal George and the other conservative U.S. bishops gone rogue? Or is the Pope letting them play bad cop while he makes nice with the popular new American President? Actually, this makes more since... The Vatican and Roman Catholics by in large are not new to politics.

Catholics voted for Obama & are perfectly happy with him speaking at Notre Dame this weekend. Those opposing President Obama are a small but loud minority [the likes of Alan Keyes & other loony Republicans

Yes, I heard the same thing tonight on the Nightly News. Small fraction of folks who oppose but the younger folks of the student body idolize. It's probably the 55+ and older alumni who are opposing?

Catholics only voted for Obama on a 53%-46% basis.

Besides, having a friend in the president of the US is a much better prize in the eyes of the pope than appeasing a few hundred thousand protesters at Notre Dame. Plus Catholicism is rapidly losing membership while Islam continues to see explosive growth, so it isn't like it matters in the long run...

Frankly, as a Catholic, I am not all that impressed with Pope Benedict but he has praised President Obama several times. The issue of Obama speaking before an enthusiastic crowd of students overshadows the small group of disgruntled extremists. President Bush gave the address at Notre Dame also [and he was responsible for the death of hundreds executed in Texas & an immoral war that cost our nation greatly].
