Walk into any ICU ward at a hospital and you will see how fast Atheist's somehow have a change of heart and "find God" when their child or spouse or family member is fighting for their life. Interesting how that seems to happen.
I also believe that your scenario of "repentant atheists in the ICU" is contrived. You concocted it. How many patients or family members actually tell you "I'm an atheist but now I believe in God; save me please!". The answer is close to ZERO. The reason being that atheists are a minority in the population at large, so they are less likely to be found in the ICU, in the mall, on the streets, or wherever. Besides, we can actually verify the patients' demographic information and religious affiliation in their medical records, and virtually no one ever writes down atheist in their records.
The great majority of people who end up in the ICU are religious, primarily Christian. They are the ones who demand that everything be done to save them.
There are atheists in foxholes and ICU's. Crying out for help in a bad situation, making deals with God or the Devil, whatever... not "proof" of anything. I really REALLY dislike it when believers try to tell me those are anything more that acts of desperation. When people are desperate they don't think rationally and will reach out to anything they have heard about so depending on who and where you are you will reach out to various sources of supernatural power.
I think atheists have every right be as loud and proud as any believer. But the fact is that most atheists don't give it that much thought.

Actually it's crises and a need to come to terms with the apparent blankness of existence that created the need for what we call religion in the first place.

Since you don't work in the ICU, how can you contradict someone who does?????How long have you been in nursing helping people.....
Dawkins himself disturbs me in that he is absolutely convinced god doesn't exist and is practically venomous against those who aren't athiests, be it agnostics, spiritual people and people in organized religion. He believes science has all but proven that god doesn't exist, yet science still has yet to learn fundamental aspects of the universe. We don't even know if we are in the only universe or if there are multiple universes or what is the primary consituent in the current universe. In the world of quantum physics it becomes just as theoretical as the question of god. Concommitantly, we haven't even been able to determine what god is.
Dawkins to me, is just as bad as organized religion because both sides want capitulation on matters that have not been, and may never well be settled.
Too many questions, too few answers. In the meantime i'll watch and observe as an agnostic. I find comfort in the unknown if the truth is out of my reach. I will respect my fellow man, resist urges to quick judgement, live with an open heart and an open mind and enjoy the live I am living. It is the best outlook to have wheter god exists or not.

Here's someone who thinks they are god!! They can read minds!!! They are everywhere ...in ALL life and death situations....ALL ICU's ....in everyone's MIND!!!!
