The plan, if you'd look past the ticker headline, is to shore up businesses until they can stand on their own. GM requested this intervention.

When the economy / company recovers, the government intends to back out. I hold them to that. If they do not, then we have problems. But, as it is, this is not some socialist takeover. It is drastic action in a drastic time created by the greed of all of us unwilling to regulate ourselves. Similar actions have been carried out by governments from Japan to Germany for their own automakers.

Come on, guys. Enough with the hyper-rhetoric that the sky is falling. Let's look at the big picture here. During the height of WWII, the government accounted for over 30% of the U.S. GDP. And yet, here we are. Still standing.

GM on the brink - bankruptcy filing expected - May. 31, 2009

In Soviet America, car builds you!
I have always bought GM, but GM is gone, whatever it was before, it is completely gone now.

I'll never buy anything GM again, I'll buy Ford, until 0bama forces them to go bankrupt, and then I'll buy from South Korea or Japan, but never again from GM.

Its sad, but the GM we all knew is gone.

I own a 2006 Trailblazer, fantastic vehicle, never had a problem with anything, and has a smoother ride then most cars. too bad the government forced GM to make a lot of cars no one wanted, just so they could make the SUVs everyone wanted.

Well of course you haven't had any problems yet...its a 2006. You shouldn't have problems with a car that new. I'd be interested to see how reliable that Trailblazer is in 10 years. I still see lots of 90s and even 80s model Hondas and Toyotas on the road running strong. My Honda is a 2001 and runs like the day it was new with no problems whatsoever. I had a 1996 that I sold in 2007 that never gave me even a minor problem.

When did the government force GM to make any cars?
They were a private company and chose to make whatever cars they wanted. If they made good and bad cars is their own fault. It's called watching the trend, understanding what the public wants and if that means making less, better cars, then so be it. If that means researching more in order to remain competitive, again just do it! If they didn't do their homework and remained ahead of the curve there is no one to blame but themselves.

Got a 1999 Land Rover Discovery (ford bought them out) with 184,000 miles on it. Runs great.
