Simply put, the people have spoken. So was waterboarding part of the duress that forced him to take the money? Sorry Mark this will sort of water down your intended appeal to the Republican base during your planned run for President in 2012.Mark Sanford Asks For Stimulus Funds "Under Duress"

^ I thought the 10% of the people in the state who are unemployed standing outside the governor's mansion helped, too.

Of course, Sanford didn't give two hoots in July about them until he saw the pitchforks...

I'm rooting for him to run in 2012. There are lots of good Mark stories to share.

If this is duress for Sanford, better not run for Pres you think? Only has one state to run, by the sound of it very poorly. Taking care of his people how would he run a Nation with a massive crises on all fronts let alone world crises?

Yeah, he caved to the state supreme court. He seems to think the balance of powers means something.

Being from Chicago, I understand that you probably don't follow SC state politics.

To sum it up, SC has a bizarre constitution, which gives too much power to their disorganized, ideological, rural Legislature. Sanford has spent most of his time in office fighting and vetoing the ridiculous crap the legislature sends his way. This non-cooperation puts him in the path of several important legislators, and paints a big target on him politically.

So it really is sort of a comedy, from my perspective, no longer a South Carolinian. You have a governor who is libertarian-ish and fiscally conservative, but more or less held hostage by the neoconservative (Pro-spending, Pro-Jeebus) legislature, who never allows the Governor's plans to be brought into action. When this situation inevitably causes South Carolina to plunge to the bottom of the statistics, the legislature (with the help of the newspaper) start looking to blame the governor, causing your typical ignorant South Carolinian to proclaim: "Why didn't the Gubner DO SOMETHIN'?? We need a gubner who gon' LOOK OUT fo' us."

The state media, whose bias I don't fully understand, plays an important role in this.

That's an accurate analysis of the situation.
