Now sooooooo many people are going to be offended, but this is not about only americans, but rather a small segment of the American extremist christian right, apparently many live on this forum.
This group of dominionists can be seen in the mega churches of Florida and the massive evangelical demonstrations calling the "soldiers of god" to take up war.
These groups have a shocking similarity to current and past fascist regimes around the world.
The first aspect is thier Faith they put in thier "divine leaders". people such as jerry falwell, James Dobson, James Kennedy ect spread the word of "God" and it is only through them that people can hear it. It's a sort of cult of personality that has led millions of Americans to depend on them for guidance in every aspect of their lives, from what job to get to how to deal with personal problems. Like Hitler, These Leaders are shown to be "messiahs" and the only people who can lead them to victory. SOme of these evangelical leaders have even claimed to of "healed people" on thier tv shows and promised to "bring people back from the dead" (although we have yet to see it). in Public showings, many in the crowd are seen crying, and asking these "celebrities" to heal them and bless them, honestly believing them to be the "right hand of god".
Secondly, like the Nazi's, they have attracted many people who were in despair. While Pre-war germany was suffering large unemployment and starvation, so have many Americans felt a cultural starvation, a feeling of being pushed outside by the harsh realities of science and the world. These people are often desperate are looking for something in thier life to give them meaning. something or someone to pass on thier moral judgment for the collective spirit of these "leaders". The "community" that they join is inclusive, accepting, and makes them feel wanted.. as long as they follow unquesitonably..
The conversion process, like that of Nazi germany, involved many different groups pulling people in often with lies. the people sent out to convert are told to tell of a near death experience, and how knowing that they were saved and going to heaven gave them peace and overcame the fear of death. if they don't have one, the people who run the "evangicalizing" workshops encourage them to make up a story. Once taken in by the warmth and acceptance of the the "church", its hard to leave. the backsliders are labeled as unsaved, traitors, doomed to burn in hell. This has led to tearing families apart, those who continue believing and those who have seen how they have been used and try to leave
The Cult of Masculinity is not only encouraged at the administrative level (the pastors and preachers who preach, almost all of which who are men), but also at the family level. Often, these speaker will only address the Men, and use a language that is aggressive and appeals to men. They portray socialist and liberal policies as feminine and weak, as well as gay men men. they encourage a system in which women are too obey their husband to be "good Christian women".
Just like the Nazi's these dominionists have chosen a scapegoat. according to them the weak, non-believers, gays and socialists are to blame for the moral decay of thier country. Some even go so far as to say that 9/11 was because god has stopped shielding america for thier weakness and acceptance of the "sins" they have allowed to go on..
They, like the Nazi counterparts, have attacked "truth" on all fronts. they twist and pervert science to their own ends, and tried to portray creationism as a real, supported science..
We lived under a fascist regime that subscribed wholeheartedly to fascist ideals for the last 8 years. They first began their grab for power under Ronald Reagan. They grabbed Congress in 1994. They were overwhelmingly defeated in 2008. It really sucks for them that those days are over and they are out of power. That's why you see all the hatred here on CD.
The only Fascist I see are the ones attacking people of Faith... Don't worry though God will be there when you need him......
I haven't noticed an attack on people of faith, just attacks on people of certain faiths. Attacks, I might add, that are fully justified as the OP points out. The vast majority of Christians are not adherents to the lunatic fringe of the conservative movement despite the concerted efforts of conservatives to leave that impression.

I don't believe that anybody is attacking faithful people in general. At least, I am not. In fact, I consider myself to be a Christian.
However, this so-called "christian coalition" is a fascist movement and it ought to be recognized for what it is and it has. Sunshine still makes the best disinfectant.
Of course, those 'christians' who subscribe to these warped and twisted views of true Christianity will never understand. Perhaps Falwell described his flock well when he said:
"Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions."

I admit, may not be a regular church goer, but, I am more than familiar enough with the Bible to understand it's lessons of FALSE PROPHETS.
As for me, God, as I understand him, gave me a brain and wanted me to use it. The Jesus Christ I know, taught me how to love with the heart God gave me.
