Yes. They were granted asylum there because American law prohibits deporting people to countries where they are likely going to be abused (China). Most of them are being temporarily resettled in Palau.

As Jill61 said, these people are innocent. As are many others who were held for years at Guantanamo. Although I bet it helps you all sleep better at night if you stay ignorant of the facts and just assume that every one of them was Bin Laden's Number 3.

We need smarter conservatives. Desperately.

Today's geography lesson.

See map of Afghanistan?

Afghanistan is a mountainous country that borders Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan China, and Pakistan.

Afghanistan has long been a major trade route linking India and China forming one link in the southern portion of the Silk Road.

During the reign of the Great Khan, the entire region was converted to Islam.

It must be nice to be so much smarter and better informed, using only the (left-wing, liberal) media, than the actual investigators, prosecutors, defense attorneys and judges who saw and heard all the evidence. You should probably find a way to market your abilities -- you could become a bazillionaire!

In fact, they were captured by bounty hunters and sold to the U.S. The Bush admin took them to Guantanamo to appease the Chinese govt, in hopes it would support our "war on terror."

I don't know why the govt needs to pay to send these guys to these tropical islands when I am quite happy to rehome a Uyghur right here at a significant discount. This may not be Guantanamo but my kids are always grounded.

I took Laura C's post to be in jest and then when I read her link I knew that it was just that. I wonder if you may have misinterpreted what she meant.

I heard those who got to Bermuda talking like they were very happy with the outcome of their situation. When asked if they were better off in Gitmo than they would have been in China they replied that their years at Gitmo were surely better than at home would have been. They all looked very fit and one rubbed his belly when he said Gitmo was better than his home.
