No. English should be the official language of the United States.

Spanish should be offered as a foreign language along with Chinese, Hindi, Russian, and other languages of large trading partners.

Yes I am quite sure non-Catalans are fluent in the Catalan language!

Thrilling stuff. And completely irrelevant to the OP as well as my comments. But you would not be the first person to change the subject after having his mistakes highlighted.

I was forced to take Spanish (Castilian not Mexican) in High School (back in the Precambrian) and German in college. I have forgotten most of both. Learning to speak Geology, Biology and Calculus was bad enough but at least I remember then.

Well they are certainly stronger than any of the Latin American nations where Spanish is spoken and we all know it's not for Spaniards that we're being told me must learn Spanish, it's because the Latinos are not able to learn English or adapt to this country so we must adapt for their benefit.

Why not require more practical languages like Visual C++ or Sign Language for the deaf?

How could any school system possibly be considering any language other than English...which, to judge by what you have to listen to on a daily basis, is hardly being taught at all?

Most foreign countries require English in order to graduate HS, even Haiti. Since English IS our primary language, I don't see any reason to not require Spanish as a language to be learned since it is our "second" language in the US.

The ignorance in this thread is outstanding. I'm hispanic and bilingual but took Spanish classes as an elective to improve my writing skills since I already knew how to speak it. Should it be mandated at schools? No it shouldn't be but to deny that Spanish is becoming more prevalent in the US is sticking your head in the sand at the obvious reality that hispanics now number 45 million or basically 1 in 6 Americans. I also say this applies to Spanish speakers who refuse to learn English since there chances of improving their lives through employment opportunities is also diminished. I do not understand the mono lingual mentality of so many Americans.

The ignorance comes from the xenephobia many have that the culture is being overtaken which is pure and utter nonsense. Most children of Spanish speaking immigrants usually lose their ability to speak in Spanish if they don't use it enough to retain it as evidenced by how many Americans of Mexican descent can't even speak or read & write Spanish anymore.

The reality is there are several hundred million people to the south of the US whose primary language is..tada! Spanish! Why do you think Miami is the Latin American headquarters for so many multi national corporations? That is because there is a profecient & well educated bilingual workforce in place. This workforce communicates with customers in Central & South America in their language while able to communicate with their English only speaking bosses. It makes business sense. So go ahead and stick your head in the sand while the economic opportunity ship passes you by.

Hasta luego y que tenga un buen dia!

If the Latinos were bothering to learn English then it wouldn't be so "important" that Americans learn to speak Spanish to accomodate them.

Other immigrants like Asians and those from India don't resist learning English and they'll end up on top. Where I live so few people learn English and cannot spell when they do, that transcriptionist jobs are going to India.

But keep in mind that globalism is a big failure, this economy is going down the tubes. The American consumer cannot support the entire world much longer and there really aren't jobs for all the Americans in those Latin American headquarters serving the Latin American elites fleeing their own nations.

When you show me that the several hundred million people to our south are accepting English as a second language in their nations as much as you tell us we should accept Spanish as a second language in ours then we'll talk.
BTW any customer in Central and South America who wants to do business in the U.S. and doesn't learn English should be the one who loses out.
