The US was an agrarian society up until ????. My grandparents lived on farms during the depression and they all had food. I'm not saying the government should feed everybody.

I'll tell you what....if my neighbors were hungry, I would feed them!

Excellent, and good for you. I like to think that most of us have the same basic decency.
Now, if your neighbors are just scratching out their living, and don't have enough money to buy him desert, and he occassionally doesn't have as big a meal as he would like to have, being a growing boy and all, who has the right to tell you you MUST pay a few dollars a month so he can get a full & balanced meal?

How is it "oppressive" if you refuse to do all the things necessary to keep yourself and your children fed? Your really just oppressing yourself.

So no one who disagrees with you can possibly be educated or charitable, eh? Well, so much for a fair & honest discussion.

It's common decency, it's humane, and we live in a society where hunger is not acceptable.

When I say hunger, I don't mean like being hungry an hour after eating Chinese food. I'm talking about the possibility of malnourishment. Hunger so bad it hurts.

Sorry if my background is not believable enough. It is not as if I'm claiming to be rich or successful.

Thanks very much for the discussion. My apologies it strayed far off topic.

It is common decency. It is humane.
Do we have to right to force you to buy him a meal?

Force? If they go through the right channels and qualify for assistance, my taxes will help to provide them food. If that's what you mean by "force". It's my duty as a taxpayer and a member of society.
