I agree with you. There are bad physicians out there. I've personally encountered them. However, the majority do not act that way and I don't think all physicians should be penalized and prohibited from doing their job when someone who isn't trained in medicine and can't make those judgement calls (Obama) are making policy as to what test and procedures are valid. That decision should be left between a doctor and his or her patient. You realize that doctors can't win either way. If the doctor fails to perform a surgery and the patient is harmed in the process, he or she will be sued and lose their license. The number of procedures will not decrease. The only difference is that doctors will be paid less and there will be more paperwork and hurdles to get procedures approved.
I really do not think that Obama will be making the judgement calls on medical procedures. As it stands right now, it is the insurance companies that are coming between a doctor and the patient. The system is broken and this has been tossed around for sixty years. I think it is about time that the American people get affordable health coverage and that the insurance companies get some competition.

The government has already made these judgement calls in the past. Who do you think determined how much a procedure or office visit was worth. It wasn't insurance companies. It was the government. In 1988, they hired a Harvard economist to assign utility or values to certain procedures. Generally speaking, procedures are reimbursed more than office visits even if a procedure takes less time and an office visit lasts longer. This is why primary care fields earn considerably less than specialists because they have less procedures.
I agree that insurance companies have also acted irresponsibly which is why I question why the adminstration has not spoken of direct efforts to regulate or limit private insurance companies with regards to establishing premiums. We are doing that with GM and Banks yet we allow insurance companies to set whatever premiums they see fit.
I just want to know why Obama thinks the Peditrician is going to profit off recommending the tonsils to removed over prescribing allergy medication. Does the PED get kickbacks from the SURGEON who removes them? I don't think so.
But some insurance industry drone making decisions based on how it will profit his or her employer doesn't.
Fascinating.
The government is far worse. Insurance companies still fear litigation should they fail to approve of a procedure a physician requested and documented. The government answers to no one and there is no recourse. I worked at the VA and the government doesn't approve of most things that private insurance agrees to. I feel so bad for the veterans because they endure the worst healthcare in the country even though it's free. Any veteran who can afford to provide himself with private insurance will elect to do that versus relying solely on the VA because they know how poor the quality of care is. And it's not the doctors that make this treatment poor, it's the government's decision to ration care. I love the veterans and I literally have to fight for them every time I see them because the government doesn't want to pay. Ask any doctor who works at the VA and they will tell you the biggest obstacle isn't disease but getting anything approved by the government.

Maybe it is because I live in an overly populated area of the country and get to see and hear more of the realities, but why do some people seem so naive as to what goes on in the medical and pharma industries? The Internet really is a good tool to research things and more people should use it for that. Obama might have given a poor example, but nevertheless, there are many corrupted physicians.
I know a single mom who was on medicare. She took her children to the dentist. The dentist decided that the woman's three-year old son should have all his teeth capped. He would have a more attractive smile, and his teeth would be more resistant to decay.
Dentists capping baby teeth.....
Because it benefits the doctor, not the patient.
What a concept!
OK, how is this a reflection on our HC system and not the doctor. The doctor is a crook and should have his license pulled.
Nation’s ENT Surgeons Respond to President Obama’s Press Briefing Remarks on Tonsillectomy Procedures
Quote:
In reply, the AAO-HNS stated, “We, too, are in favor of evidence-based medicine that supports quality patient care. President Obama’s statement highlights the complexity of medical decisions like this. However, the AAO-HNS is disappointed by the President's portrayal of the decision making processes by the physicians who perform these surgeries. In many cases, tonsillectomy may be a more effective treatment, and less costly, than prolonged or repeated treatments for an infected throat.
“For the past several years, the Academy has been developing clinical guidelines based on evidence and outcomes research, including ‘Quality of Life after Tonsillectomy,’ a January 2008 supplement to the journal Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery. We are in agreement with the President’s statement that physicians, patients, and hospitals should make the decisions, based on the evidence, about what’s best for patient care.”
Anybody else he offended at the presser last night? Oh, cops, that's right!
You know, there is a saying at these kinds of media events - "do no harm".
I think he wasn't listening. Meaning his presser did more harm to his credibility.
He has a very nasty habit of demonizing people for no good reason and also for pitting one groups against another.
