You may count labor unions in that group too. They're less about providing their members with protections and benefits than they are about increasing memberships through legislation so they can rake in more dues.

Do I sound a bit cynical? Almost 20 years of working in politics will do that to you. It also did it to my wife.

"When did the profit motive become the only reason to do anything? When did that become the new patriotism?"

and how can we turn it around?

I am going to assume here that Bill Maher has no investments in health care or no investments period otherwise be wouldn't be saying things like this. Since America and the world for that matter are so directly tied to their respective stock markets, businesses are interested in answering to their stockholders. Improving the bottom line is their way of doing this. Do I think it is right? No, but the liberal utopia of health care for everyone at "no cost" or profit is noting more than a pipe dream. It is foolish to think that it could ever succeed. And for Maher to imply that the government is not interested in making a profit, he is a fool. Most if not all elected politicians, and this includes Republicans, are out for one thing and one thing only, power and control and catering to special interests. Look at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to see the corruption involved there. The government is the biggest souless vampire out there and fools like Maher are too blind to see it.
