An Oregon congressman says he wants to test having a government GPS unit in every car so a tax could be imposed on the miles driven.
The proposal, H.R. 3311, which calls for a test project costing $150 million-plus, was introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.

While this could be looked at at being a good thing to tax the number of miles driven, the addition of a gov't GPS unit to your car could open up a whole new can of worms.

Don't shoot the messenger, I Googled and got this source:

Congressman wants government GPS in cars

Would you believe, this has been introduced here in NC, as well. It didn't use GPS tracking, but rather annual inspections that we have would track mileage and anyone using more than a predetermined allowance of miles would be taxed.

Totally ignorant bill as many folks here in rural areas have to travel an hour or more to get to work. Plus, many students (who can least afford these additional taxes) commute long distrances to class.

On top of it, some of our idiot legislators here proposed a tax on any vehicle that is modified to use biofuel. YEP. So that diesel my son and I want to buy - and convert to use recyled cooking oil - would be taxed annually - and it was an outrageous fee (over $1000 a year). The reason? Gas in NC is highly taxed, and we would be avoiding (their statement) paying those taxes by using recycled cooking oil.

Unbelievable.

I think they test it in Oregon for three more years and get back to us. Make it a big tax. By then we'll have a new Congress. We'll also have new governors that tell the to go to you know where.

GPS seems overkill and I don't see why a gas tax doesn't accomplish what we need, but it certainly passes any reasonable screen as to what the government as always taxed -- use of a public good, the roads.

Your under the crazy idea that government is happy with just the gas tax.
Remember gas goes up then it would seem like people cant afford it all the while the government makes more profit on gas then the oil companies.
So they just create a new tax so they can kill to birds with one stone more taxes and another way to track you. Big Brother in full effect.
Another way to bleed us dry!

Like I said let the revolution begin.

Funny that they want us to have all new cars, (Cash for Clunkers) then they want to tax the miles in that new car!

Sounds fishy to me.

I agree with the GPS being overkill. Not to be paranoid, but that can be a slippery slope. Once we all have government GPSs in our cars, all we would need is a terrorist to deonate a nuke in a big city for Patriot Act II to come along and allow them to track citizens whenever, then a couple abuses later.....

Big talk, nothing more. Pay the tax and shut up.

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away
