For the White House, it's critical to keep the drug lobby either neutral or
in its camp, given the muscle that the pharmaceutical industry is able to
flex. PhRMA is watching the administration closely to make sure it sticks to its deal.

"I'm going to be as honest as I can be. I'm keeping my eye on the ball... We
have made an $80 billion commitment toward improving patient care and
we're sticking to it," said Johnson.

White House Confirms: Deal With Big Pharma Bars Price Negotiations

This could turn out to be a really good strategic move on Obama's part... He'll have Big Pharma on his side in the Health Care Reform Debate and Big Pharma does indeed carry a lot of clout in the Health Care Industry, without a doubt...

Then what happens to this deal that Hatch and Co. made with big pharma for a 12 year exclusive ?

Drug industry donates to health care overhaul opponents | APP.com | Asbury Park Press

"Lawmakers who count pharmaceutical companies among their biggest contributors lead the opposition to a health care proposal that would cut costs by allowing generic drugs to compete sooner with pricey biotechnology drugs, campaign-finance records show.
..
This month, the Senate health committee approved 12 years of exclusivity in a measure authored by Hatch and Sens. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., and Kay Hagan, D-N.C."

To be honest Happy, I did read your link... Maybe it is two different matters. It looks like the Bill that was Authored by Hatch and Hagen target generic drugs whereas Obama's deal with Big Pharma talk of price control measures targeting their own pharmacuticals?

I don't know either Duke.

Maybe a case of the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing ?
Maybe a deal for different drugs ?
More like big Pharma making multiple deals so it doesn't get left out in the cold ?

I'm not happy that Hatch's deal gives them a 12 year exclusive over generic drugs..more then the normal timeframe.

Congrats, this keeps Bush's plan for no volume discounts for Medicare and no importation of cheaper drugs in place.

Now, who's in the pockets of big pharma?

The gubment has been kissing pharma's hiney for a very long time.

NIH funds research . . . and then when there is a breakthrough, pharma gets the patent.

I have been screaming about this for years.

Then the American public, who underwrote the research thru/ NIH, gets gouged over the drug's price once it is on the market.

Talk about a honey of a deal for pharma . . .
