"Paul Krugman's from a 2002 New York Times editorial:

"To fight this recession the Fed needs…soaring household spending to offset moribund business investment. [So] Alan Greenspan needs to create a housing bubble to replace the Nasdaq bubble."
Krugman. 2002.

The divides have solidified. No compromise on anything in sight. Instead of fighting why don't we start the big job of splitting up?
Because most states would then be split in half. Liberal or Conservative, all states have plenty of each.

To the OP:
You're talking about the intransigence of the extreme factions of the two parties. It is the leanings of the great majority "middle" of the American populace that you need to be watching. Those folks allowed Dubya and the Fat Cats, er, Republican Party to do their thing for 8 years, and by the time of Obama's election they had seen what came of it. The great middle has been pushed politically to the Left in their thinking by realizing (TOO LATE) that ALMOST COMPLETE ABSENCE of financial regulations and the structural consolidation of key economic sectors into oligopolies is BAD for the economy. Now they know that BIGNESS in the private sector needs to be moderated by regulations. The great middle also sees more clearly the trend in the ongoing lowering of the US standard of living due to this market consolidation. The great middle has decided to force their elected leadership to start DOING SOMETHING about offshoring jobs, destroying industrial capacity, accelerating investment in alternative energy development, etc. The great middle now realizes that it's not in their favor to continue to hand any more of the government and the economy to the Rich.

That's just a start. If you can find what article or amendment gives congress the authority to make laws in these areas, I'll shut up. Good luck.

In any event, I DO support a limited, constitutional government, as was originally intended by the founding fathers. Our government now is anything but that. Both sides are to blame, as we have been going down this road for a long time. So do I, but at the same time I cannot see any way to go back, since we the People have supported the actions of the government, we put them there.

For someone who claims to support the constitution as written, and then turn around and blindly support the current democratic agenda strikes me as peculiar. Before anyone tries to say I'm a republican (again), I'm not. I didn't support W, I don't support my horrible House Rep; in short, I don't support those who seek to expand government influence in my life. The choice between parties right now is getting to the point of just being a choice of socialism or fascism, neither of with I am comfortable with and both I am willing to fight against if necessary.
I do not blindly support the Democrats or their agenda, I was and am against the bailout as it was done, too few controls and accountability, too much spent and wasted, and some companies, including banks, should have been allowed to stand or fall without the government bailing them out. Socialism has been occuring for many years, as you say, I think that before spending more we need to reform much of what we already have, it would save Billions. Change to a flat tax or consumption tax, it will add Billions to the budget. Get the Government out of peoples personal lives, something both sides attempt to do on a regular basis, it isn't their job.

That would be a welcome change since the Blue states currently subsidize the Red states. Have to keep Bubba supplied with bib overalls, and moonshine.
