Switzerland has long been under pressure from European neighbors and the U.S. to open its bank records for foreign tax authorities. The IRS case against UBS has been partly credited with pushing the Swiss government to agree in March to comply with tax investigation rules from the 30-nation Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. UBS earlier this year named about 300 American clients in a separate case.

The Swiss banks pwned America on this one. They're releasing a tiny fraction of their total client list. Also, don't look for any Swiss banks to open US offices anytime soon.

Oh, and forget about having any Swiss bank with no US offices releasing ANY records to DC. Ain't gonna happen.

is it the same difference as between "breaking the law" and "breaking the law, but I have an excuse"?

No other country in the world taxes both domestic and foreign capital gains. Americans who obey this law should be ashamed of themselves.

If they go after individuals, I expect them to go after shell companies in Bermuda, etc. as well. Somehow, I don't think that's a reality.

The Swiss did the same thing with Britain.
You think tax cheats are heroes? Common criminals are your heroes?
