In July 2003, Coleman, a nurse practitioner, learned she had a malignant tumor growing on her right kidney. But as a contract worker for several doctors, she did not receive health insurance. Coleman's treatment totaled about $35,000, and she was forced to take out a mortgage on her house to help pay for it.
"I [fell] through the crack ... and I [had] a great job and a good education," said Coleman, a mother of six.
Realizing that her financial and health woes were not unique, Coleman -- now in remission -- became determined to help those in similar situations access medical treatment.
I work for one of the top 5 financial institutions here in the USA and the health insurance the company offers is CRAP, let me say it one more time C-R-A-P! It is almost the same as NOT being insured.
Some of these brainwashed GOP idiots have the audacity to say that the system we currently have in place is GREAT. I would not call what I have a health plan, more like a Ponzi scheme
Coleman could have purchased insurance on her own. And as a contract worker she probably earned more than a permanent employee doing the same role so cost was not an issue for her. She made a poor choice. She chose to 'go naked' and it cost her. She's a pretty lousy role model as a mother if she won't demonstrate the importance of having proper health insurance and giving it the priority it should have. Tough nookies for her.
And even if you ARE insured, you are under insured. We pay out the a$$ to get a high deductible and constant arguments and bureaucratic nightmares and paperwork with our PRIVATE insurance company. It recently took me 3 months and a dozen phone calls to clear up a $200 bill - a $200 bill that would have been around $140 if I paid cash. That means $60, or 30%, went to the private insurance bureaucracy that couldn't straighten out my bill for 3 months. No wonder we pay more than any other country for health care!

Typical argument of a GOP mindless robot. Do you have any idea how much she would paid for insurance on her own? Ignorance is bliss.

Psssh...that's IF they would have accepted her.
She might have had a pre-existing condition like ACNE in her teens.
It's good some people didn't have to deal with being denied health insurance in the individual market but everyone isn't lucky.
