Gee the dealers are happy, buyers are happy, 600,000 plus improved fuel effeciency cars are now on the road and these buyers will get better gas mileage than their old clunkers meaning more money they save at the gas pump while polluting less. How were low income families damaged?
By the way $3 billion is a drop in the bucket compared to the $1 trillion boondoggle called Iraq with no results! Not even lower gas prices! At least these new car buyers got something for their $3 billion!

Just checked. According to Yahoo news they did not extend the program. They extended the deadline for dealers to file the paper work.

Some of these low income families will now get back to work. Working to build and replace the cars that have now been sold from the lots. And I think that is a great thing!

Very good point by the Cato author. Also, see the links in the article and then tell me it "works". Something FREE always "works".

Actually I also complain about that fairly often... Good point.

When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.

-Ben Franklin

Yet nobody seems to care. I suppose those who benefit from voting themselves money, why would they.

Does anybody really care about the Constitution anymore, or only when it falls in line with ya'lls agenda?

Why make stuff up? From cars.gov:
"The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train."
So everything but the drivetrain and engine may be sold for parts, and the rest of the vehicle is scrapped for metal. Doesn't sound like the "literal disposal of cars" now does it?

details, details. That's not important. What is important is the government is giving people money so they can give it back to the government (GM) so the government (GM) can say they have a profit without saying they got government money to do it with

Banks are making out because all these people spending government money have to take out a loan for the balance and now the banks get interest payments every month for the next 3-6 years.

It's a win/win for the goverment, banks and GM.

Now if the government would just release that data they promised we'd probably see that Honda and Toyota are getting the bulk of the business.

Cash for suckers was just a big scam. It will do nothing but hurt poor people in the end. Also, wait until a good amount of people start defaulting on their loans, and wish they had their "clunker" back.

You are quoting a government run website. Here is the bitter reality on what is really happening to these poor vehicles, what a waste. I sure could have used this truck....
