I think it's really patriotic and cool of these students go up against the school over delayed aids, laziness, and more. This problem has been going on with HBCUs for far too long and it's about time someone finally does something about it.

I'm dealing with these same issues right now at Texas Southern University (Houston). Before school started, I was told I was financially secured, but now 2 weeks into school I have an outstanding balance of over $2,000. I received no refund check and had to buy my books, parking decal, and other school supplies out of POCKET! (Books alone were over half a thousand dollars!) On top of that, on-campus residents were forced to buy a meal plan that was over 1,000 dollars.

One girl from Connecticut, whose mom was working two jobs to get her started at TSU. Had to return back home due to not enough financial aid, and the sad apart about it was she wasn't aware that she didn't have enough until the second day of school when her student account was purged.

It's really annoying when a student's education is interrupted due to money problems or because of laziness from the staff. The worst things about dealing with these schools are the financial aid department!

It's always somebody elses fault.

"had to buy my books, parking decal, and other school supplies out of POCKET". so, who should have to pay for them"

"not enough financial'. Don't go to school on credit. Work, pay as you go. There is no law that says you have to get through college in 4 years.

Wow, just wow. Books, meal plans, tuition. Just how much money OF YOUR OWN did you plan to spend for a college education ?

Do people really plan to go to college with 100% loans for everything ?
I didn't realize it was that bad. How's about working and going to school part time or at night ?

Having just sent one off to college, I hate to tell you that we are long past the time of Andy Rooney and Judy Garland in raccoon coats and model T's going off to State U brought to you in Technicolor.

Somehow I get the impression that folks have not been to school in a while. Or maybethey went to a community college where the semester costs a few hundred dollars.

Many students depend on financial aid and loans. If your tuition is 20k and you get aid for 10k and loans for 10k, someone telling you that your aid is being reduced to 5k(after the semester has started) is a huge hardship. Schools typically don't let you pay on the installment plan after the fact. People need to make arrangements to work more in the summer or get more loans well before the first week of school. If you spend all the money you saved, how are you supposed to pay rent or eat while to school figures out its accounting issues?

Geesh....

BTW, financial aid is not credit.

I have a son in college now too. He's going to do 2 years at community college and then finish up at the university.

I've been saving since he was in elementary and got into my states's guaranteed tuition plan.

I guess I'm just stymied that people are going off to college with $0 saved and relying 100% on loans for every aspect of college. Now I understand the over $100K in student loans.

How much is it per unit in Texas? It's only 26 per unit here in California.
