I was wondering what the public thinks a physician should make per year. This is not loaded by any means and was just curious. Let's generally break up primary care and specialists, with a specialist being a cardiologist or neurosurgeon. Keep in mind that there is 4 years of college, 4 years of medical school, and three to nine years of additional training after med school for residency and fellowships. Also the work week is 60-90 hours a week, depending on call sharing and clinic hours. Most of the "no call" docs have 50 hours a week baseline time in the easy jobs.
Any thoughts? Obviously, ZERO is not a reasonable response.
Primary care?
Specialist?
I will check it out tonight- took the day off to watch high school golf. That is my first day off in 6 months.
I want my doctor to make a lot of money. Anyone who saves the life of a family member, friend, or myself is worth millions to me. Anyone who takes physical pain away from my family, friend, or myself is also worth millions to me. I don't care if all I had done was a "simple" operation like an appendix or gall-bladder removal; these people should be VERY WELL paid for it.
Trauma surgeons should all be millionaires in my book.
Physicians should make what the market dictates. That is how it works with every profession. Everyone is paid what they are "worth". Many just hate to realize that they are worth so little.
Considering that only a tiny portion of the population has the capability and drive to become doctors, they should be well rewarded. Given what actors, lawyers, sports players and financial people make, for things that take a fraction of the education, effort and ability, I feel that most doctors are underpaid. My thoughts would be in the $500k-1.5mil range, after business related expenses (malpractice). This is a field that we want to attract the best and brightest to, in order to do so they need to be fairly compensated.
What the market dictates, and they should never be allowed to form guilds in a direct effort to restrict new competition from entering the market. Loosen restrictions and open up medical schools. Allow a "University of Phoenix" equivalent for MDs, and you'll see the market reduce salaries to appropriate levels. If people want to take their chance with a lesser qualified physician with extremely limited ability to sue, so be it. Given today's prices, there would be no shortage of demand in this area.

I don't think you can put a figure on what doctors do, it also has a lot to do with where the doctor is practicing. A doctor in NYC will have many more expenses then one that practices in Alabama.
I think doctors should like every other profession make as much as they can within there field. A doctor working 12 hour days will make more then one working 5 hours a day. You simply can not put a figure on someone's hard work.
