apart from the war of independence and the war of 1812 i think we have got on well. we have both fought in gulf wars and today in Afghanistan, we have both looked after each others backs
Millions upon millions of Americans are descended from our British blood. may they be Englishmen,Scotsmen, Welsh and the Ulster protestants.
If Ronnie and Maggie were still in power the relationship would never brake.
Is Barack Obama looking for closer ties with the rest of Europe rather than Britain.
Obama is working on doing just that. When he said he wanted to reset our relationships, did anyone think he meant to throw our allies under the bus and embrace the dictators and despots of the world?
Wait. I thought the Bush caused the world to hate us and Obama was going to restore our tarnished image throughout the world?
There ya go. It was really the evilllee Bush who planted the post-hypnotic suggestion that O'hussein return the Churchill bust to the British embassy.
O'acorn is doing a great job of befriending America's enemies, aka the world's tyrants, and shafting our friends.
His skills are undeniable. But not anything that your average sociopath would have a problem doing.
What has Obama done to weaken ties with the UK? Broken economic or military agreements? What do you mean by "looking for closer ties with the rest of Europe" and what is wrong with that?
I don't understand the complaint.
The special relationship is a figment in the fertile minds of British politicians. History shows us that the US have always pursued their own interests first and often at the expense of British interests. These include .... pressurizing the UK to decolonize, refusing to support the UK over Suez, encouraging Argentina to invade the Falklands (Jeanne Kirkpatrick), using British troops in both Gulf wars but refusing to share any of the reconstruction contracts with UK firms, etc. etc.
Obama views the world as a place in which the UK (and most of Europe) is less relevant than his predecessor did. Its not that he isn't interested in maintaining a close diplomatic relationship - its just that he doesn't go out of his way for anything other.
This is a pragmatic administration, and the issues of Israel/Palastine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Russia, and China take far greater priority than shmoozing with a lame duck Prime Minister. Thats not to mention the enormous domestic task that he is facing, in terms of the economy, healthcare, cap and trade, rising deficits etc
I don't know what the 'special' relationship really means - but I think that it will certainly change with Obama. But then, he has always been frank in his views both in his books, and during the campaign. He was very open about the missile defence shield a long time ago and expressed his view that Europe was militarily weak and needed to become more organised and cohesive - I guess reailty may come as a bit of a shock for some!
