The thing that struck me was Acorn's constituency. They went out to round up all the welfare recipients. These are people who do not have the mental capacity, ability or inclination to compete in a capitalistic society.

Not only that, they were not protesting for jobs or opportunity. They were protesting for hand outs. They were protesting for more welfare. They wanted a guaranteed national minimum income. These are a real pathetic bunch. What a great constituency, huh?

Then they extort the banks. They have little or no income or they are on welfare but they want the banks to give them loans. I noticed that most of them seem to be Negroes. So maybe it's white racism that is preventing them from being productive or maybe it's just that they do not have the intellectual capacity, ability or inclination to compete in a capitalistic society. These folks would do better in a socialist society but that will not be the United States of America if I have anything to do about it.

This thread is nothing but an example of mass hysteria. There is bad news, boys and girls. The entire anti-ACORN initiative is just as much a hoax as were WMD, yellow-cake, and aluminum tubes. Do none of you learn from your past mistakes?

ACORN did not pressure Fannie and Freddie to make subprime loans. The GSE's do not make loans at all. They purchase loans that meet their standards from local lenders.

ACORN, like many other organizations, served as a broker for banks and S&L's covered by CRA in making loans into the low- and moderate-income communities from which they took (federally insured) deposits. Efforts toward such lending are a requirement of the law. There is no requirement to lend to any unqualified borrowers. The loan portfolio that was built up under CRA performed better than industry averages.

Neither the Fed nor the Bush administration took any action to reign in inappropriate subprime lending, even though they were advised and pressured to do so. The administration did propose schemes to pull the GSE's back from their secondary mortgage market share so that their friends and supporters on Wall Street could have a bigger sandbox to play in. That was it.

The loans that ultimately failed and triggered the credit crunch were typically made between 2002 and 2006 by unregulated private brokers into low- and moderate-income and other communities at deliberately high-cost terms for the purpose of feeding paper to the Wall Street investment banks who were making a fortune by slicing and dicing those mortgages into ABS's and derivatives thereof.

There was never any $8.5 billion slated for ACORN. There was funding for projects and contracts to support the mandated missions of HUD that many different groups and organizations, including ACORN, would have been eligible to bid on.

Obama was not ACORN's lawyer. He was a staff attorney who billed a handful of hours for a case brought against Citibank by plaintiffs that included ACORN for discriminatory lending practices. That case was joined by the Justice Department. Citibank eventually settled the case and accepted significant penalties rather than be found guilty.

ACORN has never been involved in a case of voter fraud. As is the case in any large-scale registration drive, some of the 13,000 canvassers that ACORN hired in 2008 tried to cheat ACORN by turning in faked registration forms. As has been the case for years, where patterns of such fakery emerged, ACORN turned the evidence of voter registration fraud over to authorities and assisted as needed in prosecution of the offenders.

What ACORN actually does do is serve as a network for local grassroots organizations working to defend the consumer, housing, workplace, and voting rights of low- and moderate-income individuals and communities. What frightens the right-wing and prompts their attacks on ACORN is the fact that if eligible minority and other low- and moderate-income voters had gone to the polls in 2006 at the same rate that eligible middle-income and higher white voters did, there would have been 7.5 million additional ballots cast. The right-wing does NOT want to see any of those ballots being counted, but ACORN in 2008 made sure that about 10% of them were. The assault on ACORN is primarily a reaction to that success and a desperate attempt to run a covert campaign of vote suppression by heading off any further such success in future election cycles. That is what this is all about and those of you who have bought into this campaign lock, stock, and barrel without ever having actually examined the goods have once again been duped by your masters.

And speaking of those masters, they are starting to get a little antsy over figuring out how to keep control of the monster they have created. If all this ACORN investigation talk becomes more than just a rallying cry, there is every chance that investigators will dig deep enough to uncover the degree to which the right-wing has simply manufactured allegations against ACORN for their own partisan purposes. It would not bode well for Republicans in 2010 if they and ACORN had de facto switched roles by the time that election rolled around.
