Which is the essence of socialism, or tyranny of the majority, if you like. Why should others tell me what kind of health care I receive? If I have the means or were allowed the private insurance for a parallel private system, what gives the "majority" the right to rule over my health?
If the majority of Canadians like it....so be it. Just like here in America where if the majority of Americans say they don't want gays and lesbians to marry...gay and lesbians can't marry. Tyranny of the majority.
The list goes on. I agree in some cases majority rule isn't always best but it's working for the Canadians. But hey, aren't you lucky you live in America? The insurance companies can jack up their rate at any time, they can refuse to cover certain treatments, they can refuse to cover you if you have a "pre-existing condition" (acne, depression, C-section, etc). and the abuses go on.
I just love these little threads about UK Death Panels when no bill in our Congress is even proposing the UK health care system for us. Most of the bills are just more of the same. We don't even really have a health care "system." It's more a market. If you have money, good for you. If you don't...good luck.

It's not the utopia you seem to make it out to be. It's cumbersome at best and people die due to receiving treatment too late for conditions such as cancer.
With regard to the UK death panels, I've actually seen very few people discussing that. Odd, since that's how the thread was started and that's what the title refers to.

How about getting a decent job? That would work wouldn't it? You act like the only way to get HC coverage is to pay for it yourself.
Mind you the article was posted in 2005 but fewer companies are offering health insurance benefits to their employees and if they do, more of them are putting the costs on their employees.

Uhm....people here die because they receive treatment too late for cancer or worse yet...they die because they never receive treatment. If you can't afford to see a doctor, what makes you think treatment is an option?

If you all admire our socialized medicine up here so much, then why aren't you stampeding toward the border and asking to move here? This is what I don't understand.
I think people like you individually, and I say it respectfully, are suffering from the "grass is greener" syndrome. You have heard things about our system and you're so fed up with your own that you're ready to throw the proverbial baby out with the bathwater and go full-tilt toward socialism.
It's very easy to criticize the UK system because of the transparency. They are accountable to the public, not stockholders.
With private insurance companies, they aren't required to publicize their decisions as to whether or not they will pay for someone's treatment, why they canceled someone's policy, etc.

So, if I came to Canada today, I would get the government insurance without needing a visa? Canadia citizenship? Without a job?
Next time, don't be so presumptuous. I've lived under the Canadian system all my life. You, on the other hand, live in Florida.
You said:
"The Canada Health Act doesn't even allow us to purchase individual health insurance to supplement the public system. How is that fair?"
And I quoted something sayng that Canadians can have private insurance. So, I thought you were another anti-HC poster pretending to be Canadian who comes here to thrash Canada and their Health Care system.
