It is culturally acceptable to kill your wife, or daughter if you believe she has shamed your family in some cultures on the planet.

It is not culturally acceptable in the United States to do this.

I'm pretty sure that man knew it is against the law to murder any person because he fled the USA and was arrested trying to enter England (with a connecting flight to Baghdad no doubt) so he was aware of criminal law. No direct flight from the USA to Iraq, if there was a flight he would be in Iraq by now.

He killed his beautiful daughter and then tried to hide in another country who also does not accept this.

The part that I bolded made me feel physically sick.

What an interesting idea, a class like that, but right now there's just an interview and a test required. You only need to "have a basic knowledge of U.S. history and government"... nothing cultural or legal.

Although Im sure there are private companies that offer such classes.

I think that because we don't have any such requirement for a culture class gives immigrants (illegal and legal) the idea that we have no culture in the USA and that you can bring whatever culture values you have from your nation of origin and continue them when you get here.

This kind of thinking needs to stop.

I think if people aspiring to citizenship were to take some decent, interesting, valuable classes -- it could only help. People would feel more assimilated, want to visit interesting places in the US, understand regional histories and styles and customs... and cooking ... understand the basics of the Constitution... it'd be great!

Bring the crime rate way down, fewer alienated-feeling people....

What they need to do is deport anybody who is a religious nutcase. Including the Christians if possible!

I know -- pious enough to kill his own child, but not pious enough to face whatever transitory, temporal, worldly punishment the Infidels would assail him with to insult his heroic defense of Allah.

I asked the same question, and that's why I voted no. Clearly people in this country come from a wide range of cultural experiences and backgrounds, and I don't think there could ever be a definite consensus on what constitutes American culture. Of course honor killing are horrific, but that topic goes far beyond basic cultural issues and really reaches into the area of international human rights.

And if she was from Pakistan or India I would have said that too.

What's your point?

Iraqui is a nationality and doesn't immediately infer any religion. There are Christians in Iraq.

Furthermore religion doesn't kill, an individual kills. So I would not say that Christians commit the majority of murders.

Also, if someone practices a religion that tells them point blank when to kill an individual, and they believe it, that person has a whole host of other problems in my opinion.
