Just like the Councilman said, the church ppl are very "childish". church groups are always whining that they earn their tax exempt status because of their philanthropic deeds. If they no longer wish to perform these duties, perhaps it's time that DC remove their tax exempt status if they don't deign to comply.
Would like to hear libertarian response on welfare.
In a better world, there would be no need for "welfare". but capitalism does not afford us a "better world". even economists say that our country must have 5% unemployment at best. thus, there will always be ppl who are left in the margins of society, who want work but cannot find it. the welfare net should be there to help those who cannot find work, but I draw the line when we pay for illegal aliens and their anchor children, young able bodied mothers and fathers who don't wnat to work, etc. If the catholic church does not want to help others, then it should stop belly aching and start paying taxes like the rest of us. Get out of the wagon and help the rest of us pull it, as Sen Phil Gramm used to say.
There will be another non-profit social service agency happy to step in and work with the grant money. The Church can continue to provide services to the poor without partnering with the district.

I never heard any church or church-related group defend its tax exempt status on the ground that they engage in charitable work. The rationale underlying the exemption is the recognition that the power to tax is the power to destroy--which runs counter to freedom of religion. Even if churches did no charitable work whatsoever that rationale would still support the exemption.
In Massachusetts the Catholic Church stopped its adoption work because the state would not exempt it from the requirement that they place children with homosexuals. The church's tax-exempt status was not thereby endangered.
Regarding your title for this thread: "Hating gays......." I don't see this as "hatred" that the Catholic Church declines to participate in programs that require them to place children with gay couples wanting to adopt. It's against their beliefs to sanction homosexuality.

The article has nothing to do with adoption by same-sex couples.

They don't want to pay for medical coverage for same sex spouses.
