So you're a country with plenty of money but not much arable land for growing crops. How do you feed your people? Well, you could take over a lot of space someplace that wont argue with you -- say, Africa -- and create your own plantations. Private corporations are getting interested, too.
"Ethiopia might seem an unlikely hotbed of agricultural investment."
I'm not too worried about overseas farming. This country has plenty of arable land that is being basically wasted. We have more arable land than China, yet we have less than 1/4th the population. Even if in the far far future farmable land became an issue. We could always go to vertical farms which would be better for the environment anyway if they were powered by renewable energy.
“'Africa is the final frontier...It’s the one continent that remains relatively unexploited.' Emergent’s African Agricultural Land Fund, started last year, is investing several hundred million dollars into commercial farms around the continent. Africa may be known for decrepit infrastructure and corrupt governments — problems that are being steadily alleviated, Payne argues — but land and labor come so cheaply there that she calculates the risks are worthwhile.
"The payoffs could be immense.... Ethiopia, like all of Africa, is full of such opportunities, which is one reason the World Bank says that investing in agriculture is one of the most effective ways to speed economic development on the continent."
First the UN said it was "neo-colonialism" but now they've changed their stance and say it's "direct foreign investment". A bit of hypocrisy there maybe ? UN softens stand on rush to buy farmland
China also bought mines and oil leases around the globe. China does not have at home what it needs for it's population. But..China is bringing in their own people to manage it and it's all being exported back to China. The native people there will not benefit. This is colonialism.
