Although it might seem absurd to ask this question, my experiences here lead me to believe that some people prefer to name call, and some people prefer to reason through things carefully. It is interesting to me to know why people on all sides of an issue pick the argumentative strategies they do.

A small batch of the people just call names--these are the outliers. They make up about 20% of us on any side of an issue, and they will always be vocal. But what do the rest of you think? Do you get sick of having extremists representing your point of view? The level of discourse 'round these parts lately has been very disappointing to me. If you agree, what should we do about it?

I don't feel like the extremists do represent my views. I represent my views. I don't like the name calling, nor do I like the posts that say, "all liberals think ...", "all liberals have no morals", etc.

Pretty soon you'll start seeing posts like, "I like civil arguing/debate, but they like name calling." From both sides. If I'm right, can I call myself a prophet?

It's not just here. Civility on the internet is a lost art and getting worse. I, too, hate the generalizations like "all liberals" or "all conservatives" think/do/are this or that. But to answer the OP question, I try very hard not to name-call other posters. The solution to name-calling is simple: flaming is against the board rules. If enough people dislike flaming they can report the offenders to the moderators. I, however, prefer to let the flamers ramble on and show the holes in the fabric of their souls. But then again, I haven't been active on this forum long enough to see what kinds of problems result from the frequent flaming wars I've seen so far.

Even worse are those who, based on my opinion on one or two issues, jump to the conclusion that I'm a "flaming liberal". Come on people! Accept the fact that some of us actually can think for ourselves and that such thinking can lead one to liberal conclusions on some issues and conservative conclusions on others. Just because in the few issues I feel strongly enough to comment on I come to the 'liberal' conclusion, does not mean I'm liberal on everything!

It's sort of a chemistry thing. In one hand you hold a beaker containing a solutiuon of propaganda and emotion. In the other you hold a beaker containing a solution of fact and reason. If you mix the two, a predictable reaction will occur...

Your post would be great if you indicated who it is you are talking about.

Why? Can't you discuss issues, without specific names? That seems to be another problem on this forum. That in order to discuss an issue, some have to have a name to attach to it. And that is why so many of the outright attacks that happen on this forum get so damned personal!

This thread is a joke,
just watch Sean Hannity or Rush Limbaugh (Conservative propaganda leaders) and you'll see that they can't talk about 1 issue without name-calling or labelling somebody.
