January 20, 2001: After an election too close to call, with a bitter battle over votes in Florida, a fractiously split Supreme Court stops the recount and declares Al Gore the 43rd president of the United States.
Actually Bush didn't steal Florida in 2000. The Supreme Court, or rather the 5 Republican members, decided the U.S. Constitution position on the right to vote, and have it counted, did not really mean anything. I suspect history would be much different, had Gore been "allowed" to take office. For one, we would not be in Iraq without full U.N. backing. We would have gone into Afghanistan, but would not have to have waited 6-7 years to determine why, and very probably have been out of there by now. We would have a Health reform package and be actively involved in continuing improvements. We would be well on the way toward developing the industries of the future, thus insuring our economic viability for coming generations. Probably many other things I am too tired to think about now. But, other than that, it would be just the same-o same-o.
We would be in a larger financial mess. With wars or nots Gore would have spent much more the W -- hell, he would have spent much more then Obama. And we would have just about as much to show for it.
I won't speculate as to what could have happened but as a lifelong Floridian I will say that the people of Florida did duly elect Albert Gore to the Presidency in 2000.
My road would be paved by now. We wouldn't be trillions in debt. We would still have a lot of necessary social programs to help people. Bag ladies and men would have gear shifts on their grocery carts.
