1.3 percent increase?

That was "more than expected?"

Good news, I suppose.

This is HORRIBLE news for Republicans!! Horrible, awful, terrible!! If this keeps up to 2010- which it appears it will- the Republican's dream of taking seats in Congress or the Senate are DEAD DEAD DEAD!! They are running SCARED of the OBAMA RECOVERY as the stimulus works its wonders in the US economy

LOL

Retail sales are the only ammunition liberals have as proof that Democrats have the answers? Because nothing else, including the proposed healthcare reform bill, is popular among the constituency.

Yes, that was more than expected, and it is good news.

Some of us actually don't have to put everything on the credit card. You may have to, but that does not mean that everyone has to.

Overall debt is increasing, sorry to burst your "bubble" (pun intended). Whether I personally charge on my CC or not is irrelevant to the conversation and is simply a red herring to attempt to discredit me. Incomes are stagnant, tuition/healthcare/energy costs are way up and savings are fairly stagnant. The extra spending is not coming from any magical piggy bank. Congrats on paying for cash my friend. I know how that's like and you get a better sense of what you're spending. It's just not the trend.

Well according a source's latest research, counsumers are now using more cash & less credit cards.
Holiday Shoppers Use More Cash, Less Credit - Holidays 2009 News Story - KSAT San Antonio (http://www.ksat.com/holidays/21875104/detail.html - broken link)

Less credit swiping is better for the US Economy.

Seems like people are smarter than they were eight years ago when Bush was in office.
"Debt for the American Consumer" is what the previous administrations depended on for the multiple US Surpluses.
That's what caused so many economic bubbles, which eventually had to crash. Unfortunately, this crash had to happen right before Obama entered the office.

So, a lot of the cash for clunkers customers were all cash buyers, or did many of them take out fresh 72/84 month loans? If I were a gambling man...

That article is a survey...it is entropy deficient. So what if more say they're using cash? The more that are opting for cash could also be the ones buying small items, whereas the ones who are "swiping" are buying 42" LCD TVs from China.
