Well, I think that the immigration aspect (reading the article illustrates one couple's story) is a reason to abolish DOMA, etc.
Another major legal reason having to do with joint property rights, next of kin rights, etc.
A lot of the opponents fixate too much on their subjective moral objections to the idea, ignoring the legal inconveniences (to put it mildly) placed on same sex couples who are not allowed to marry.

As long as the state continues to honor a religious ceremony, then everyone should be allowed the same rights and protections under that ceremony
