"Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed; as they are in almost every kingdom of Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops that can be, on any pretence, raised in the United States." --Noah Webster, An Examination of the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution, 1787
Those darned founders kept trying to tell people why they did the things they did and Webster really pointed it out here.
You would have to be a really hardcore right-wing foaming-at-the-mouth liberal to still believe gun control is all about public safety...or belive the government can even make the world safe.

What is one of those things you mention?
Yes the government can never make the world safe even if they take away the guns. They proved that in Russia and Germany. Neither the Soviet Union or the Reich are still in existence although they did collect as many guns as they could. Our liberals haven't been able to learn about that yet, though.
Anyone who understands military tactics, or modern warfare understand that an armed resistance with hunting rifles, hand guns, and a few altered assault rifles would never be able to overthrow the government.
I'm not for gun control, but the founding fathers lived in another era. We don't need people running around with mini guns, they are dangerous enough as it is.

Then lobby to pass an amendment nullifying the 2nd amendment...see how well that goes with constitutional scholars and congress.
