If a Highway, a bridge, a Library, or Government Building needs to be built in America, it will take years to just plan it and many more years to build it. We talk about things for ever and then when it is a crisis, then start to do something and people suffer as a result.
I can not believe it takes so long in China, who we are in an economic race with. In China if they government decides there is a need for a new road, bridge or government building it is built quickly. In America it will take 10 years.
How can America compete when everything takes so long?

How can America compete when everything takes so long?
That's a very interesting point. But having been there, I've learned. The people in the US would say, "It sure would be nice to have a bridge here." So they would study it. They would look at what traffic patterns would be effected. They would look at what other highways and byways that were already planned be effected. They would also study on the impact to the environment. Then, they would figure out where the money is going to come from and how it would be alocated. Maybe even do a study on how to distribute the money so as not to create a monopoly on one company, but to make sure that the average Joe might make a buck. Then, plan the bridge.
In China. Nice to have a bridge here. Built. Ooops. Traffic all screwed up. Tax more people to pay for it. Ducks all killed and gone. 1000 people kicked out of homes to make room. A year later, throw in another bridge because first one didn't meet the needs of growth.

The American government really doesn't want us to be competitive in certain markets. Other nations can use extremely cheep labor and we can't compete so certain markets are conceded.
As far as constructing infrastructure, like the bridge analogy you mentioned. We can construct things rapidly when we need to. Look at California, after the LA and Oakland earthquakes many bureaucratic requirements were waved and construction was fairly rapid as a result. But major construction in this country is very political, and the result is things end up costing five times as much and they take twice as long to complete.
Its by design, no one involved in the process is in a hurry to stop the flow of taxpayer dollars, especially the UNION Joe's out there leanin on their shovels!
The government screws up everything they even have a finger involved in. Why the heck does ANYONE believe that "National Health Care" will succeed????!!!!! This country is slowly deteriorating as we ALLOW government to grow bigger and bigger and become more dependent on it!!!

YEAH and it doesn't make any difference what political party is in power at the time. The more the government infringes on our rights the worse things get, and again both parties are about the same.

For the same reason Mussolini made the trains run on time (I know he didn't - shaddup - the point stands): Command economy is good for quick decisions. If, for instance, you can tell 500 homeowners that "For the good of the party's plans, your homes will be demolished in a week, be out by Thursday", you can move fast in certain areas. I may add that pure command economies tends to run into other problems for larger projects - typically logistics and quality control.
