Legislator: No Obama on ballot if he can't prove US birth | www.azstarnet.com ® (http://www.azstarnet.com/metro/325025.php - broken link)

Rep. Judy Burges, R-Skull Valley, is preparing a law to require anyone running for president or vice president to provide proof to the Arizona Secretary of State's Office that they are legally eligible to seek the office. The U.S. Constitution requires the president — and, by extension, the vice president — to be "a natural born citizen."

The kind of certification Burges wants, though, could be more difficult than simply checking for a valid birth certificate, as the arguments about his legal qualification go beyond whether he was actually born in Hawaii.

Burges believes that Obama is not a natural born citizen because he doesn't have 2 US citizen parents.

Just reading the article, that rep is a huge joke. There are actual problems that the country needs to deal with and they spend their time on shlock like this.

I agree this is completely baseless and an embarrassment to my state and to that politician. Nonetheless, I've never heard of the area she is from so it's probably some rural area in BFE

The rep. obviously knows that State law CAN NOT trump FEDERAL law. Any moron knows that according to U.S. Code, only 1 parent has to be a U.S. Citizen and that's why both McCain and Obama are LEGAL U.S. Citizens.

Her reasoning may be a bit biased, but this much is true: If a law such as this is passed at the state level, then there's not a whole lot that can be done other than to abide by it. If one state passes such a law, then its reasonable to believe that at least a few others will follow suit. This could have a detrimental effect on re-election prospects for anyone, including Obama, if birthright is in question.

The left will summarily dismiss this as "right wing paranoia," but the underlying principle that this could be a huge bump in the road for Obama is very real.

Any moron knows that state level laws still govern balloting in that state. The 2000 Florida ballot issue must have escaped your brain. Also, recall that Obama was not on the Michigan primary ballot. State laws have the ability to cast aside a candidate. The issue is the ability to get on the ballot. If a person wants on the ballot, they'd have to produce the required proof.

As I said before, the left will summarily dismiss this as "right wing paranoia," but the underlying principle that this could be a huge bump in the road for Obama is very real.

It is xenophobic garbage that only came up because Obama was elected. It's embarassing to watch.

granted, yet state ballot issues CAN NOT over-rule FEDERAL citizenship guidelines, AND therefore the ballot issue or being allowed on a ballot due to a citizenship challenge is MOOT.

The 2000 Florida ballot issue has nothing to do with that, and was a completely different issue all together.

The blatant bigotry of the backwards/backwoods Obama-bashers is abhorrent!
